　　　　久留米絣とは？久留米絣（くるめがすり）は、福岡県久留米市を中心に周辺地域で生産されている織物です。綿素材の織物で、通気性が良いため夏は涼しく感じることができ、冬は内側の熱が放出されにくいため暖かく感じることができます。着れば着るほどに肌に馴染み、風合いが良くなっていきます。丈夫な生地のため普段着としても優れた性質を持っています。久留米絣の特徴は柄のかすれやにじみです。手作業で作られた絣に親しみやすさを感じることができるでしょう。素朴なデザインの中でも、デザインの技術は進歩していき大柄小柄絣、絵絣などの技法を生み出しました。備後絣（びんごがすり）、伊予絣（いよがすり）と並び日本三大絣の一つと呼ばれる久留米絣は複雑で繊細な柄と素朴な藍色が着る人の心を楽しくさせます。洗うほどに美しくなるとも言われ、長く愛用される木綿絣です。 History / 歴史久留米の米屋に井上伝という、当時12歳ほどの少女がいました。久留米絣は彼女の探究心が、生み出した織物です。藍染めの着物を何度も洗うと色が抜け落ちるため白い斑点ができます。この斑点を調べるため糸を解き、現れた糸と同じように新しい糸を染めたことがきっかけとなったのです。この織物を加寿利（かすり）と名付け、生産を始めたところ評判となりました。絣に絵模様を入れるための技術を発展させ、徐々に生産を増やし弟子も増えていきます。 1827年（文政10年）には、弟子だけで1,000人以上おり 400人ほどが各地に散らばったことで、全国に久留米絣が広まっていきます。この頃から久留米絣業としての地位が確立されていきました。市民の普段着として一般的に使われていた絣ですが、洋服の登場により生産は落ち込んでいきました。役目を終えたという人もいますが現在、新しい取り組みが始まっており、絣の着物で洋服を製作する職人もでてきました。
